The Gallet story began in 1826 in La Chaux-de-Fonds by Julien Gallet. Gallet was devoted to professional timekeeping mechanisms and mainly instruments aimed at aviation. They specialized in chronographs for pilots, sailors, engineers, doctors etc. Not surprising that Gallet is best known for its high-performance Chronograph watches. Did you know President Harry S. Truman and U.S. racing legend Rex Mays, owned a Gallet Chronograph watch. Gallet played a large role in the aviation of the Wright Brothers, by producing a stopwatch named ‘The Sun” which was used on their very first flight covering 852 feet in just 59 seconds.
The robust 36mm stainless-steel case with brushed sides, glossy bezel and case back looks amazing. The sides of the pushers are also brushed with a glossy top. The crown is chunky and has a superb winding grip. The Valjoux 71 workhorse inside is moving like a full-blown purebred, steady, reliable and utterly trustworthy. The Valjoux 71 caliber Gallet movement features a pillar wheel mechanism which offers various functions including a 60-second, 30-minute and a 12-hour counter, plus a sub-second display. The Valjoux 71 workhorse was in production for a whooping sixty years from 1914 to 1974 to be exact. The watch hands are a beautiful blued steel color in ‘Leaf’ model, we added a blue animal friendly strap with crocodile print, to match the blue hands. The dial is a lovely cream shade, and looks almost too good to be true, was it redone at some stage? If so please give me that address, I have never seen a dial redone with such a refined print and with this kind of precision.
Two centuries on you could become the proud owner of a piece of the Gallet’s history.
