This handsome Tissot arrived right at the dawn of what would become the golden age of the bumper automatic. And honestly, what’s not to love? That unmistakable bump-bump as the rotor swings back and forth, the little kick of energy you can actually feel on your wrist…It’s mechanical engineering with a pulse. Who needs a smartwatch to tell you you’re alive when your watch keeps reminding you? Inside beats the Tissot bumper automatic caliber 28.5-1, produced from 1944 to 1953. A wonderful piece of mid-century engineering, wrapped in a warm rose-gold-plated finish that gives it all the charm of a much more expensive dinner guest. The case is gold-plated, with a stainless-steel case back. In other words, it delivers that precious-metal look without breaking the bank. And the dial, looks bafflingly good. Those square, luminous, gold-colored, dome-shaped indices add just the right amount of character, while the luminous hands are ready to guide you through the night. Elegant, legible, and dressed to impress without looking like it’s trying too hard. Turn it over, and you’ll find the familiar six notches in the stainless-steel case back, better known as Sei Tacche. Yes, yes, I know. Those six notches are traditionally associated with Longines. But surely Tissot is allowed to borrow the look without being dragged before the horological fashion police?
A charming bumper, a handsome dial, a touch of gold, and a little mechanical magic on the wrist.
This Tissot doesn’t just tell time, it gives time a little bounce.
