This stunning solid sterling silver tonneau-shaped Movado Chronometre trench watch dates from around 1910-15. The case has two Swiss bear hallmarks, a little bear on the side of the case and a big bear on the inside of the case back, plus the silver content 0.925 all these hallmarks stand for Sterling Silver. The Swiss bear hallmarks were in use from 1881 until 1934. And of course, the unmistakable, brilliant designed Movado trademark ‘hand holding a pocket watch’ which they adopted in 1905, the same year they renamed their business officially as Movado. As the Movado stems from the period when pocket watches were declining in popularity and wristwatches were on the rise, the proportions tend to become somewhat out of the ordinary distinguishing it from the most common round, or cushion shape trench watches you see frequently.
Time ticks away inside the Swiss Movado 150 MN caliber; this workhorse was in production for no less than 65 years, from 1910 to 1975. That alone speaks volumes about its reliability. The 150MN is a beautiful movement with much detail to the finish, with very fine Geneva striping.
The Sterling Silver case is curved and follows your wrist nicely. The case measures 38.5mm long (ex. wire lugs) x 28mm wide and 9mm thick. The dial looks remarkable with large pitch-black numerals. The sub-second has an inwards display towards the top, and lies slightly deeper into the dial. The fine watch hands have aged into a lovely bronze patina.
Where has it been, what has it seen, who has worn it, who has kept it safe all these years? Who knows, but what we do know is that it is a rare, unique piece that has kept track of time for over a century and still has so much to offer... who will be the next proud owner?
