Hammered Brass

Albert Kahlbrandt (1878-1961) was a goldsmith, engraver, and brass/silver sculptor in the Arts and Crafts period. He was head of his own workshop and he taught his fine craftsmanship at the School of Arts in Hamburg. He even won a gold medal in Paris during the Exhibition in 1937. Brass played an important role in Germany before and during WWI. Though the brass brooch my seem quite simple at first glance, but the more you look, the more you see the wonderful craftsmanship that when into this design. I love the fact that it is all made out of one material, one flat plane circle of brass, which is hammered with precision into a beautiful dome shape, with sculpted edges, it plays with the light and the colors surrounding it. The closure is a simple pin-hook, as you would expect on a brooch of this age. It’s a nice large brooch that will make any outfit look utterly stylish.
