Up for grabs is this sensational 1950s solid 14k gold Movado Calendolux with the stunning in-house bumper automatic and housed in only one of the best and well-known case makers François Borgel. It’s simply a match made in heaven.
Launched in 1951 and produced until 1959, the Calibre 118 is an early automatic movement featuring subsidiary seconds, day, and date displays with a bumper automatic. A lot of complications for a watch that doesn’t need a battery or a pep talk. With a bumper automatic you get a gentle nudge to remind you it’s alive, mind you a leisurely afternoon sipping tea, might not be enough to keep it going.
The original dial is an absolute charmer, featuring raised hour markers that mix numerals with diamond-shaped indexes. Add the elegant dauphine hands, and you have a dial that knows how to dress for dinner without looking as though it tried too hard.
The case is solid 14k gold and wears its credentials proudly. The case back is stamped 14k, while inside you'll find 14k 0.585, along with squirrel hallmarks on the interior and side of the case near the crown.
But wait, there's more. Inside the case back, the markings include the celebrated François Borgel FB-with-key mark, Movado Factories, Switzerland, Fabrication Suisse, and Movado's distinctive watch-in-hand logo. There's also a Geneva key hallmark, a Poinçon de Maître, literally translated it means: "Punch of the Master". The 'Geneva Key' hallmark, bearing registration number 11, is found exclusively on watch cases manufactured in Geneva by the firm Taubert, the successor to François Borgel.
The case serial number is engraved inside the back, with its final four digits repeated between the lugs.
The slightly domed crown sits snugly against the case, while a discreet pusher takes care of the day-and-date setting. Nothing flashy, nothing unnecessary, just thoughtful design from an era when elegance didn't need to shout.
